A study has revealed that bone fracture risk is reduced by taking Vitamin D and calcium supplements. The study involved almost 70,000 patients from all over Europe and America. The study especially revealed that the benefits were applicable to all people male or female, young or old and those who had or had not experienced a bone fracture in the past.

Although the study was first published in 2006, it has only just been made available online on the British Medical Journal’s website.

Professor of internal medicine at UC Davis and a joint-author of the journal article, John Robbins said: “What is important about this very large study is that it goes a long way toward resolving conflicting evidence about the role of vitamin D, either alone or in combination with calcium, in reducing fractures.”

He further added that “Our WHI research in Sacramento included more than 1,000 healthy,
postmenopausal women and concluded that taking calcium and vitamin D together helped them preserve bone health and prevent fractures. This latest analysis, because it incorporates so many more people, really confirms our earlier conclusions.”

Researchers working at Denmark’s Copenhagen University led the study that analyzed results obtained from seven big clinical trials that were conducted around the world. Each study was aimed at determining whether just vitamin D on its own was most effective at reducing fractures in people 70 years old or more or whether the addition of calcium made a difference. No benefits of vitamin D supplementation alone were found.

Summing up, Robins said that “This study supports a growing consensus that combined calcium and vitamin D is more effective than vitamin D alone in reducing a variety of fractures,” and that “Interestingly, this combination of supplements benefits both women and men of all ages, which is not something we fully expected to find. We now need to investigate the best dosage, duration and optimal way for people to take it.”

Digestive health therapy is a way of making sure that you have the right type and amount of digestive enzymes. Although the body manufactures its own digestive enzymes in the pancreas, a lot of help is received from the enzymes that exist in the food you eat. However, due to eating over processed or over cooked food most if not all of the enzymes contained in the food are destroyed. This means that the body has to work harder to compensate for the lack of natural enzymes. It also means that the food is not digested as completely as it should be.

enzymes also help in building strong bones, purifying the blood, fixing connective tissue, detoxifying the body and reducing inflammation. The enzymes most concerned with digestion are amylase, lipase, and protease. The biggest source of these enzymes is from fresh raw foods such as fruits and vegetables. As they are often destroyed in cooking a lot of people are taking to a raw food diet; if not completely then partially.

Another reason why the raw food diet is becoming more popular is because it is predominantly alkaline and as the body itself is more alkaline than acidic, there is a natural synchronicity. The more that food is processed and cooked, the more it becomes acidic and brings with it potential digestive problems. Moving to a completely raw food diet may be a huge undertaking, but just a little fresh food will go a long way to assisting your body with what is a pretty huge task; that of digestion.

However, it is not to be said that gains cannot be made just by slight modifications to your existing diet, steam and stir fry veg a bit more, add a little salad to your sandwich, and much on an apple a day…….

With the approach of the Olympic games this is bound be become an increasingly predominate subject.
The underlying factors are that using Anabolic steroids allow competitors to gain muscle size, speed, endurance strength and growth substantially bigger than without.
This is due to the increase of testosterone which allows the muscle to repair quicker after training, thus the athlete can work out day after day and achieve results far beyond the means of the natural ability of the human body.
The downside- speculated- increase in cholesterol levels leading to heart attack, liver and kidney dysfunction due to cysts and tumors developing on the organs, increased pressure on the heart, in men, acne development over the back and forehead, increased fatty tissue around the breast area, and decreased testis size due to the body beginning to rely on an artificial source of testosterone it stops creating its own. In women, increased facial hair, baldness, smaller breasts and hardening and enlargement of the clitoris.

The long term dangers of steroids cannot be proven, due to the unethical factors regarding studies of this nature, the data that is there is largely observational and post data. It is however correlation-ally strong in its conclusion that The benefits of taking such drugs are not without  large  health  costs to  the individual.

So why do it? Fame? Glory?
It is very easy for us to shun an athlete found guilty of taking artificially body enhancing drugs such as steroids. But on the flip side that is just the same as blaming a pop star for attention seeking.
We love to watch fellow members of the human race smash physical barriers of speed, agility endurance. We glorify those  who can run faster, longer and stronger. We cheer when the man of the match scores. We throw money and celebrity at the latest record breaker and we admire those who represent or country in world competitions.

Then they shatter the illusion for us, and we ruin them for it.

I cannot endorse the use of drugs, but i can give it credit for allowing us a glimpse of just what the human body can be capable of. Those that have taken  such drugs  may  have  selfishly  conned us into  believing  that they are  wonderful , skilful and dedicated athletes, but they have also provided us with greater understanding of the mechanisms of the human body, thrilled us and entertained us with their physical greatness.

The cost endured at the end of their careers, is  only to themselves, in the detriment of their own physical and mental  well-being
